Title: Urethane vs. Epoxy Coatings: Unraveling the Chemistry for Bathtub and Wall Tile Refinishing in Windsor, Ontario
Introduction:
In the magical realm of bathtub and wall tile refinishing, two enchanting coatings, urethane submersible coatings, and epoxy coatings, vie for supremacy. As we delve into their mystical chemistry, we uncover why urethane coatings reign supreme in this important application. Prepare to be bewitched by the secrets of epoxy's downfall - the dreaded amine blushing that leads to yellowing over time. In this article, we'll explore the intricate chemistry of both coatings and reveal why the investment in urethane's color retention and durability is well worth it for refinishing bathtubs and wall tiles in the charming city of Windsor, Ontario.
The Chemistry of Urethane Submersible Coatings:
Urethane coatings, or polyurethane coatings, are concocted from a magical blend of isocyanate and polyol components. When these mystical elements combine, they undergo a crosslinking reaction, giving birth to a robust and flexible polymer matrix. This unique chemistry grants urethane coatings exceptional resistance to moisture, making them an ideal choice for submersible applications like bathtubs and wall tiles.
The Chemistry of Epoxy Coatings:
Epoxy coatings, with their own enchanting composition, consist of two components - epoxy resin and a captivating curing agent, often an amine-based catalyst. While epoxy coatings boast remarkable strength and adhesion, they possess a dark secret when exposed to the moist enchantments of bathroom environments.
The Yellowing Phenomenon: Amines and Epoxy Resins:
As time unfolds its tale, epoxy coatings involving amine-based catalysts may succumb to an unfortunate fate - amine blushing. When confronted with the moisture-laden atmosphere of bathrooms, the amines in epoxy coatings react with their surroundings, forming amine carbamates. Alas, the consequence of this alchemical reaction is a haunting yellowish or hazy appearance on the surface, dimming the luster of bathtubs and wall tiles with the passage of time.
The Superiority of Urethane Submersible Coatings:
Fear not, for the magical allure of urethane coatings shines brighter in the realm of bathtub and wall tile refinishing. With their resilient chemistry, urethane coatings defy the curse of amine blushing, ensuring that surfaces retain their pristine brilliance, even in the humid environs of Windsor's bathrooms.
The Investment in Color Retention and Durability:
In the balance between cost and reward, urethane coatings may ask for a greater investment compared to epoxy. But, heed this advice, for the rewards are bountiful! Urethane's enchanting color retention and durability are a treasure beyond measure for this crucial application. Witness your bathtub and wall tiles retain their vibrant allure and withstand the tests of time, adding enduring beauty to your Windsor abode.
Conclusion:
As the stars align in Windsor, Ontario, the chemistry of urethane submersible coatings and epoxy coatings reveals its secrets. The dark enchantment of epoxy's amine blushing and yellowing is countered by the resilient charm of urethane coatings. Embrace the allure of urethane in your bathtub and wall tile refinishing, and your surfaces will stand as a testament to the timeless beauty that befits this charming city.

I have seen yellowing in many epoxy primers, wasn’t aware this was something in the Reglazing industry, great to know.

Sounds like old technology, I’ve heard some cheaper companies still use it and know it yellows. Good point to be asking the person your hiring.
